Flattop Ruger Blackhawks
Early Blackhawk revolvers are referred to as Flattop models. Ruger Flattops were produced from 1955 to 1962. In 1962, Ruger changed the design of the top strap by adding ears that extend up from the top strap to protect the front edge of the rear adjustable sight. Ruger Blackhawk 2 Screw vs. 3 Screw
From 1962 through 1972, Ruger Blackhawk revolvers were produced with three screws visible on the right side of the frame. These Blackhawks are referred to as “3 Screw” Blackhawks. Ruger changed from the 3 screw design to a new design that uses two pins. These 2 pin or 2 screw Blackhawks, as they are referred to, were renamed by Ruger as the New Model Blackhawk and are produced to this day.
Ruger Blackhawk Models
Early Ruger 3 Screw Blackhawks were offered in .30 Carbine, .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum and .45 Long Colt. A few were produced with a brass grip frame and these early brass frame Blackhawks have a higher value than the steel grip frame guns. All early Blackhawk revolvers had a blued finish. Average value of an old 3 Screw Blackhawk is between $500 and $675.
Ruger New Model Blackhawk Models
New Model Blackhawk revolvers are available in either a blued or stainless steel finish. Typically Blackhawks with the stainless steel finish are worth more than the blue finish Blackhawks. New Model Blackhawk Convertible Models
Both the old Blackhawks and New Model Blackhawks were and are still offered in a model called the Blackhawk Convertible. Convertible models come with an additional interchangeable cylinder allowing the revolver to be fired in either .357 Magnum on 9mm in the spare cylinder, or the .45 Long Colt and .45 ACP depending on the model with the spare cylinder. Other calibers in the Convertible model include 10mm Auto/.38-40 WCF and .32/.32-20 WCF and were only made from 1988 to 1990 and have a higher value.
New Model Blackhawk Bisley Models
The Bisley Blackhawk has a distinct grip shape that is longer, and a raked back and lowered hammer. Blackhawk Bisley models have either a fluted or a non-fluted cylinder.
Super Blackhawk Models
The Super Blackhawk is chambered in the powerful .44 Magnum cartridge. The frame and the grip on Super Blackhawks are larger than the standard Blackhawk models. Super Blackhawk have unique characteristics such as an unfitted cylinder and a Dragoon style trigger guard. Early Super Blackhawks were only available in a blued finish. An early Blackhawk Flattop model chambered in .44 Magnum made from 1956 to 1963 is fairly rare and valuable. Original Super Blackhawk revolvers have an average value of $500 to $720.
New Model Super Blackhawk Models
New Model Super Blackhawks were introduced in 1973 and produced to this day. Both blued and stainless steel finish model are available and have an average value between $450 and $760.
Super Blackhawk Bisley Models
The Bisley Super Blackhawks has a longer grip and racked back hammer. These were available with either a fluted or a non-fluted cylinder.
Super Blackhawk Hunter Models
The Hunter version of the Super Blackhawks has integral scope mounts machined into the 7-1/2-inch ribbed barrel. This model is only available in a stainless finish.
